For a World at Peace with Itself.
Pax Glocalica is a vision for a world at peace with itself seeking to combine considerations of the global and local level, rather than prioritizing one over the other.
That is likely the best approach to understanding the world of our time in which the trends of universalization and particularization are growing stronger simultaneously, intertwined in an ever more complex spiral, rather than one eclipsing and dominating the other.
For decades now all the hype has been about the global dimension. Even in the decade after the 2008 Global Financial Crisis Even when the old school conventional wisdom about the unstoppable march of globalization might have been questioned.
As a result of that vantage point, the playing out of myriad of local factors and forces, which have turned out to be rather feisty, have often been deemed surprising.
What is truly surprising is precisely the widespread failure to grasp that globalizing trends remain valid, and so do localizing ones.
That is why Pax Glocalica is seeking insights into an ever more glocalizing world, but with unending and unyielding hope of both freedom and peace!
The name of Pax Glocalica (which would be Latin for “Glocal Peace”, that is, if the word “glocal” even existed in the Latin language) is chosen to mimic the terms for regional imperial peace at different eras in world history, e.g. Pax Romana, Pax Sinica, Pax Islamica, Pax Byzantica, (there even was) Pax Bulgarica, Pax Mongolica, Pax Ottomana, Pax Hispanica, Pax Britannica, Pax Russica, Pax Germanica, Pax Sovietica, Pax Americana, Pax Europaea, even Pax Globalica you name it.
Yet, the vision of Pax Glocalica is conceived as being completely different from any one of those. It is not a vision of empires but of a world striving for both freedom and peace in which both global and local trends – and especially their interaction – are clearly accounted for, properly analyzed, and never misconstrued!
Pax Glocalica was founded by Ivan Dikov, a journalist based in Sofia (despite the smog), originally from rural North Bulgaria.
He studied political science / international relations and history at by far the best college in Grafton County, NH, and in the Eastern Balkans (that is a thing).
He served for five years as the editor-in-chief of Bulgaria’s largest English-language media (that, too, is a thing). In fact, his tenure there was so successful that he ended up on WikiLeaks.
Ivan has collaborated with media from the US, the UK, Germany, and Australia, partly on international topics, and partly on Bulgarian politics (which is a moderately intriguing political thriller in its own right).
Enjoying “general hanging out” (a quote by a college professor Ivan really liked but who didn’t really like him back as much), Ivan splits his free time (if any) between coming up with solutions for Bulgaria and coming up with solutions for the World.
Most of his solutions will never be realized because that is how both Bulgaria and the World operate – but they sure make for a good read.
